Prepping your Piece:

Some participants like to prep their piece prior to class! Prepping No need to match my design perfectly, feel free to add your own flair! For this class, we’ll be creating design guides to help us layout our composition and to use it as a guide while painting.

Step 1: Gather Your Thoughts & Create Initial Sketch

If you plan to create a New Year Butterfly with your own theme/ intention for yourself for the year, here are a few tips for gathering inspiration for your creation.

Intention: Taking time to rest in the evenings and seizing the day during the day!

This design may also take on a different meaning for you based on how you interpret the design. Below an example of how I came up with the design I’ll be teaching in the class.

Prompt: First, think of a wish/ goal/ intention that you have for yourself for 2024. Next, make a word list of words and symbols that helps visualize this goal/ intention. Then, create a rough sketch on how that can fit into the shape of a butterly.

Step 2: Prep Your Surface

Once you know the general theme of your piece, you can give yourself a head start by sketching your butterfly onto your painting surface using a pencil.

Collect the surface that you’ll be painting on as well as a pencil.

Lightly sketch the outline of your butterfly shape.

Lightly sketch you design inside of the wings of the butterfly. This will give us a general idea/ guide of what we’ll be painting. And that’s it!

See you in class!
