Prepping your Piece
Some participants like to prep their piece prior to class! I highly recommend doing this as it will allow you the achieve a better composition in the end. No need to match my design perfectly, feel free to add your own flair! I will be showing how to prep your piece live in class as well :)
What you’ll need: Your painting surface & a pencil
For tomorrow’s class, the only preparation we’ll need to do is lightly sketch out our design. Please sketch lighter than what is show in my images below. I had to press harder with the pencil so the sketch would show in the photo ;) Feel free to leave as much or as little “white space” around the design.
Note: I will be painting on mixed media paper and will keep the plain white background. Feel free to paint a solid color background first if that’s what you wish. I would just recommend it be a light color.
step 1:
Lightly sketch a curved line in the center of your page. This will be the center of the middle palm.
step 2:
Lightly sketch your first three leaves at the top of the curved line. Notice how I draw a simple line before opening the leaf shape.
step 3:
Continue adding leaves all the way down the center curved line. Make sure to keep each leaf unique and organic in shape.
step 4:
Next head over to the left-side of your leaf and draw a second curved line and repeat the same steps as with the first middle palm. Make sure this palm is smaller than the first middle palm.
step 5:
Complete the second smaller palm leaf, still keeping the shapes organic. Next, draw a final curved line at the bottom right of the page. Be sure to sketch the center line to where it curves around the middle palm.
step 6:
Complete the final leaf and be sure to sketch the leaves to where they “wrap” around the leaves of the middle palm.
